Compiling C++ Programs on Linux Need help

I am sort of new to linux, I have developed on unix so I am a little familar with it. My problem is that after I compile just a simple 1 line program the program will not run. I am almost certain it is compiled right because it shows the executable file and no errors occured but when you run either the a.out file or whatever i name it, it says "bash: hello.cxx command not found" I have done the same steps on redhat 8 and linux mandrake with the same results. Any insight would be great.

    Code:
    chmod 755 a.out
    ./a.out
See if that works (from the directory that a.out is in.
