Are you planning on installing a new OS, or do you simply want to clean the harddrive for other reasons (such as selling it or whatnot)?

If you're planning on installing over the data that's on it, you don't necessarily have to wipe it first, since whatever OS you choose will do the formatting for you before it installs. Otherwise, whenever I want to mess with a harddrive I like to use a program called cfdisk. It comes standard on most Linux distributions, so you could probably boot with a LiveCD (such as Knoppix, Mepis or SLAX) and run the program from the command line.
