how to boot into Prompt instead of X windows?

hey guys..i'm new to linux and i just wanted to know how do i boot into the prompt shell instead of the X windows system In Linux redhat 9 (Shrike) Kernel version 2.4.20-8
I want to install drivers for my video card (NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5600) and i have to have x down to do it...i tried a search here and across the internet...but i come up with seems like this should be easy since Recompiling my kernel to support NTFS was harder.

Any help would be greatly apprciated...thanks

Edit your /etc/inittab as root and change the line that says init:5:runlevel (summat like that). Make the 5 a 3.
