Red Hat and Fedora both use RPM files. Yum is probably the easiest method of installing software on both distros for most users. Otherwise, you can check this HowTo (post #2) for installing software from source:

i was referring to direct command installation...
there was an package which when extracted had a .dz extension and am not able to extract it.

I think you can use dictzip/dictunzip to work with .dz files. I've never used it myself, though. Maybe someone more familiar with it will reply.
