I am using rhel4 os. I experienced sudden problem while booting. when the booting stated it is giving following information and unable to understand what to do.
The details of message when booting process start are given below.

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem 9and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt and might try running e2fsck with an alternative superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
fsck.ext2: Is a directory while trying to open / failed.
*** An error occoured during file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
***When you leve the shell

Action taken by me:
When i am giving control-D it started again auto booting and repeating same message and stop with same "Give root password or type control-D to contnue."
When iam giving root password
it displaying followings.
bash: xset: command not found

host: command not found
bash:id:command not found
bash: id: command not found
bash: id: command not found
bash: [ : too many arguments
bash: dircolors: command not found
bash: [: = : unary operator expected.
(repair filesystem)1#
while giving df -k it showing only
/dev/sda8 of 0% freespace
I tried to reduce file in that partition but unable with a comment that is read only file.
I donot try any further. and request help of forum.

you need to run fsck first and fix the corrupt entries in your / file system. See what you get - success or not. Try rebooting after that and see what if anything fails. If fsck is not successful, your disk may be hosed.

rhel4 booting problem
dear friend
I am unable to run fsck. When I am giving fsck in maintenance file prompt it is showing command not found .

Have you tried to boot up in Rescue/Recovery Mode using Installation Media? Try executing fsck command from Recovery shell.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
