You wont find all AD features, but Samba provides some basic functionality.

samba sharing like a windows sharing. AD is different.

Samba 3.x can behave like an old "NT domain controller." This is similar but different than AD but still supported by old Windows clients. I would not recommend going in this direction, however, as it is not supported by anyone.

Samba 4 promises to be AD compatible, but it does not look like it is ready for deployment, yet.

If you want to get rid of AD altogether and go in a different direction, you can get the Red Hat IPA product and use it for LDAP-based directory services. You can set up Fedora to perform LDAP-based authentication with IPA.

None of this is simple, however.

    Cheers,

No, it's not simple. But it is very satisfying when it works.

If you want to replace your AD with a mix of LDAP and Samba (which do the job admirably, btw), take a look at Fedora Directory Server. You don't need to be running Fedora to use it - and it's very capable. With the right schemas you can do quite a lot with it. I ran it for a couple of years to keep my domain working.
