You can try LiveCDs instead of installing Linux distro. LiveCDs are a bit slow in performance but you will get an idea about available packages and hardware support.

Check this poll on Fav Distro. LiveCDs of almost all distros are available and most LiveCDs have install option too.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

only ubuntu can be "installed" inside of windows, you have to use wubi.exe to do this, otherwise you will have to run a livecd

Just for info Coopstah13, I have NimbleX2008 installed inside Windows using Windows Bootloader to initially boot it up. I think Puppy has this ability also. Changes are saved to Usb Stick. But you are right on for a new User. Wubi is the way to go to get their feet wet first before trying out what I did. Wait a sec. There is this option also with Ubuntu that I guess isn't well known either.

    Here are 2 more options:

    1) Install MS Virtual PC, then install your distro inside that.
    2) Install your favourite distro, then run Vista inside a Qemu/Xen/KVM virtual machine

First option is easiest if you already have Vista.
