    Package conflicts; how/which to disable?

I got the dependencies resolved, and started the updates - 733 total. I woke up today, and had a package error message:

    file /usr/
    1) sbin/sysreport conflicts between attempted installs of sysreport-1.4.4-1.noarch and sos-1.8-9.fc10.noarch

    2) share/sysreport/functions conflicts between attempted installs of sysreport-1.4.4-1.noarch and sos-1.8-9.fc10.noarch

    3) libexec/gst-install-plugins-helper conflicts between attempted installs of PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin-0.3.14-1.fc10.i386 and codeina-0.10.1-9.fc10.noarch

    4) bin/synclient conflicts between attempted installs of xorg-x11-drv-synaptics-0.15.2-2.fc10.i386 and synaptics-0.14.6-11.fc10.i386

    5) bin/syndaemon conflicts between attempted installs of xorg-x11-drv-synaptics-0.15.2-2.fc10.i386 and synaptics-0.14.6-11.fc10.i386

    8 ) share/man/man1/synclient.1.gz conflicts between attempted installs of xorg-x11-drv-synaptics-0.15.2-2.fc10.i386 and synaptics-0.14.6-11.fc10.i386

    9) share/man/man1/syndaemon.1.gz conflicts between attempted installs of xorg-x11-drv-synaptics-0.15.2-2.fc10.i386 and synaptics-0.14.6-11.fc10.i386

Do I delete/disable the first one in each conflict set?

Will it be like this with every update?

Fedora Core (x)??? They should call it Fragile Core (x)

I've only ever seen errors like this if I've upgraded from a previous version of fedora (6 to 8 was quite messy, I recall) or if I've been using incompatible external repositories.

    My advice is to:

    - check your repositories - remove any that dont provide packages you actually use. You should try to stick to the standard repositories and rpmfusion, that should provide you with the safest mix.

    - use yum from the command line to find out which packages are conflicting. If necessary, do the update using yum in small batches, ignoring any that create conflicts.

    - if you use yum to remove conflicting packages, dont use the '-y' option and it'll give you a list of stuff it'll try to remove. If it threatens to remove system-core packages, abort and resolve the problem by removing a different package.

At a guess, from the stuff you've listed above, I'd suggest you try to remove the sos, codeina and synaptics packages. If you need them you can always try to add them again after the update is complete - and if they conflict at that time, you can remove other conflicts first before adding them.

It's not called Fedora Core any more, it's now Fedora. And once it's all fixed you should not experience any of these problems any more when you update unless you're using 3rd party drivers from obscure repositories.

    Thanks Rox...

I disabled a couple of repos, but not enough I guess:

    /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-rawhide.repo ---> rawhide disabled, rawhide-debug disabled, rawhide-source disabled.

    Same 3 disable in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates-testing.repo - testing, testing-debug, testing-source.

    Still editing enables/disables...

Should I disable 'debug' and 'source' in only these 2 repos? Or all repos with 'debug' and source'?
This WAS the repo list, before I disabled the 2 sections listed above:

    Code:

So I disabled FROM each conflict pair the second item, from the 'Packages to update list'.

Not good enough - I STILL get 2 conflicts.

AND I disabled from EVERY repo file the 'debug' and 'source' sections.

    Help?

How can you call this distribution Fragile Core - you've been installing stuff from the testing/unreleased repository ('Rawhide') which you're not advised to use unless you know what you're letting yourself in for and can deal with the fallout...

Once the packages are installed, disabling their source repository will not uninstall them. You need to remove any packages you've installed from the testing repositories, or you may suffer (believe it or not) dependency issues.

Remove the conflicting packages using yum, as I suggested earlier. You dont have to re-enable a repository to remove packages you installed from them.

I don't know how/when I enabled all the repos that were enabled; might have been when i was tired and frustrated on something with it...

I unchecked some more stuff from Package Updater. It's now updating, so when it finishes, I'll look through the 'add/remove software' list to uninstall some stuff...

    Thanks...

The most important part of this lesson is, next time you'll know better. You learn something new everyday and messing up your system is part of becoming more proficient with it. As mentioned by Roxoff, it's never a good idea to mix repos unles you really know what you are doing, you're getting there.

Somehow, amidst this catastrophe, my wireless is working on update re-boot.

Upon closer inspection, it is not. FF restored pages.
