Sync Active Directory with a Linux NIS server

I am far from a Linux user... just want to throw that out there first. I've studied Windows environments only.

My I.T. director wants me to set our Linux box up so that it syncs with Active Directory on our domain. He mentioned NIS to me and asked that I set it up. I've done some reading but none of it really makes sense to me. He wants to be able to control the users in the Linux world via Active Directory... is that possible? If so where the heck do I start?

I thank anyone and everyone ahead of time that is willing to help me out.

Kind of a dumb way to go about it, since ActiveDirectory is a lobotomized LDAP server (read: retarded, limited, missing parts), but then I don't know your boss's level of knowledge.

You put a competent adult in charge of a retard, not the other way around. Much better to put the Linux box in charge and led ActiveDirectory feed off it.

I have had a brief go at this, I believe that the way you want to approach this is to use SAMBA. I couldn't actually get it working with our 03 server, so I cant help you with setup however I believe that you need to use samba

hope this at least puts you in the right direction

He is what I would call "Windows environment challenged"
He only knows Unix/Linux... even that is limited from what I've learned since I started here. Thanks for the input though and I am going to take your advice and use the Linux box as the "competent adult". I will post my progress as I move along with this just in case someone else comes to Linuxforums looking for the same thing.

Good luck with that, and let us know how it goes. I wouldn't mind being able to sync my Zimbra server (certain address books only) with my clients' Active Directory address books.
