    Extending disk

    How do I extend a disk? Do I use FDISK? For instance, my root (/) disk has been filled 99% because that's were all the RHEL5 updates go. I have extra space to extend.

    Its really easy to handle partitions through GParted or PartedMagic LiveCDs. GParted is also available in LiveCDs of most of distros.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    Parted

    How do I use the parted command without deleting the current disk? For instance, I have disk that starts at 66 and ends at 326. I would like to resize the disk by 10000mb. When I put in the parameters interactively I get an error:

    File system was not cleanly unmounted! You should run e2fsck. Modifying an unclean file system could cause severe corruption.
    Ignore/Cancel?

    Are you trying to resize mounted partition? Its not possible to do that. Use LiveCD to resize partition.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
