Are you using any text editor or backspace key doesn't work at shell prompt only?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Same problem...
My backspace key just stopped working as well, in Fedora 10, but only terminal. It works normal in gedit and firefox, and probably everything else, but not terminal. It behaves like the delete key, which still works fine. ^h will work as a temporary fix, but that is somewhat inconvenient to use on a regular basis.

Fixed it!
Go to, in terminal, Edit -> profile preferences -> compatibility and set "backspace key generates" to "Control-H". That should fix the problem.
