[RHEL4] Adding Icons to Applications Menu
Hi guys,
I'm working on an installer for our software, which only runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3. We add desktop icons currently, but my boss wants me to add icons/shortcuts to the Applications menu too. I had a look a while ago, and came across this page, which kinda disheartened me because of the following quote:
Needless to say, although it tells me a little bit about how the menu system is organized, it doesnt tell me how to actually add my own icons via script (or other programming interface). I searched for a bit more, couldnt find anything, and another senior guy at our company who knows quite a bit more about Unix tried to do it and he couldnt either. So, I said although it could probably be done, the time required wouldnt be worth it since no information could be found. Anyway, my boss now says this isnt good enough and would like me to have another go at programmatically adding application icons. Does anyone have any idea how this could be done? Or does anyone know of a good resource for this kind of thing? It is often useful for an administrator to add or remove items from the main desktop Applications menu. Owing to the complexity of the menu system, modifying the Applications menu can sometimes be a difficult task. For example, it is much more difficult to add a menu item than it is to remove a menu item.
Thanks in advance for any help.
(PS before anyone asks, although it is possible that we will move away from RHEL4 in the future, that isnt on the cards right now)
