Installing SPSS for Linux on an Acer Aspire One

    Hello,

I need some advice on how to install SPSS for Linux on my Acer Aspire One. The SPSS program comes on a CD with a setup.bin file. SPSS claims it have been tested on Red hat Linux. The program has nicely installed on my other laptop (Acer Travelmate) with Xandros OS. When I try to log in as superuser (su), the terminal window freezes so I'm not able to enter my password. I've been in contact with the Linpus help desk. All helpful suggestions are appreciated!

    Sincerely Asgeir Mamen

When you installed redhat, did you create a root password?

I take it you are logged in, running gnome. Right click on an empty piece of desktop and click 'open in terminal' This should open a terminal.
When you now type su, it should ask for password.

Try and see if you can log in as root instead of a normal user. If you can't, there's a problem with your system, so try installing rehat again.
I don't use RH much, but haven't had problems swiching to su in a terminal.

    Loging in as super user

    Hello again,

You respond fast - thank you for that!

The Acer Aspire One uses Linpus Linux based on Fedora 8 (as far as I know). SPSS just says that they have tried out their software on RH.

There is no log in of the start up module of the Aspire PC (or NC?). I tried to start the setup.bin file to intall SPSS, but the file would not run. The Linpus help desk suggested I should log in as super user, and then I discovered that I was unable to do so. The Linpus help desk has not responded to my question of how to log in as super user. The setup.bin file did install nicely on a Debian distribution (Xandros) on another PC of mine.

    Still more suggestions?

    Sincerely

    Asgeir Mamen

Have you tried, answered my suggestions above.
When you installed redhat, did you give root a password? if so, this is the same password you need for su - su and root are the same user.

    .

In Limpus Linux I use Alt+F2 to envoke the terminal window. At the promt I enter SU and the prompt asks for password. There the terminal window freees, so the only thing I'm able to do is to hit the return key. This of course leads to a "invalid password" respons.....

    Thanks for your comments!
