Cannot connect to WiFi
Hi
I have a Compac Evo N610c using a 3Com Wireless PC card that I cannot get to work. I run Fedora 10 and need some help here.
Some information (have used Pauls guide);

Looks like you might not have the firmware. You can get it here: p54 - Linux Wireless

Thanks!
Now I have the file, but what do I do with it?
Cheers,

On the site, you'll see next to the download links, it says required filename. You need to rename the downloaded file as suggested. Then move to /lib/firmware. To write to that directory you need root priveleges, so it's probably easier from a terminal.
Code:su - mv /path/to/firwmare /lib/firmware/

Now it looks bether:
eth1: uploading firmware...
firmware: requesting isl3890
eth1: firmware version: 2.5.6.0
eth1: firmware upload complete
But when trying to activate the card in the 'Network Configuration', I get the following:
Error for wireless request "Set Bit Rate" (8B20) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Input/output error.
Any ideas what to do now?
Cheers,
Fredrik

My guess is that you downloaded the wrong firmware. Which did you download? I think you need the miniPCI / PCMCIA download for kernels older than 2.6.28, which would then be renamed to isl3886. Looking the the p54 website isl3890 is for the USB wireless, but your card showed up with lspci...so it's not usb, right?

No, it is not a USB card. I tried both miniPCI / PCMCIA and the USB (older than 2.6.2
.
When using the miniPCI/PCMCIA named as isl3890:
eth1: uploading firmware...
firmware: requesting isl3890
eth1: firmware version: 2.5.6.0
eth1: firmware upload complete
When using the usb named as isl3890:
eth1: uploading firmware...
firmware: requesting isl3890
eth1: firmware version: 2.7.0.0
eth1: firmware upload complete
When using the miniPCI/PCMCIA named as isl3886::
eth1: uploading firmware...
firmware: requesting isl3890
prism54: request_firmware() failed for 'isl3890'
eth1: could not upload firmware ('isl3890')
I guess the system is looking after a file named isl3890 not isl3886.

Hmm. I'm running out of ideas. I found this site which offers some suggestions.: SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory - LinuxQuestions.org
It's pretty old, but perhaps something will work. One thing I notice is that it suggests the proper directory is /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware. I don't use Fedora, so I can't confirm if this is correct for F10.

Thanks, I'll have a look there!

Fedora keeps the firmware in the /lib/firmware folder. Sometimes it needs to be in it's own folder in that directory, but dmesg will usually mention that.
Did you try the firmware from Maxi's firmware site? There is a section for the isl3890 firmware, here is the latest version.
