cannot connect to server on my vista OS
hello,
i am currently at school and in order to do my hw i need to connect to the schools Solaris 10 server, using my HP vista home premium laptop.
when i am in the classroom i can connect to the server using either Secure Shell Client for windows, putty, or the virtual Ubuntu desktop OS terminal.
unfortunately, when i return to my dorm, i cannot connect to the server at all with any of these. i tried pinging the server and all i get is a request timed out. (works in classroom.) the network is the same (the school wireless network). i dont seem to see what the problem is if its thru the same network. everytime im in my room it does not want to do what i need it to. i have also put the ports in my firewall exeption list. please help
---the server is called apollo and i was told to login using dudrob35@apollo.pct.edu....dudrob35 is my username which works...just not in my room =/
thank you in advance

So you can't ping the server from your dorm and you think your on the same network? (Possibly a different subnet)
Your IT Dept. can't figure it out? ( They either don't want to help you / can't be bothered / don't know what to do / should be fired )
You're out of luck...Last edited by matonb; 04-16-2009 at 05:29 AM. Reason: spelling

Its not a server or client problem for sure.
Its a straight network problem.
as matonb said, it can be different network.
But if your are sure you are in same subnet and same physical network.
Is there any other router in dorm connecting to same network?
Network may be the same but there can be multiple routers.
How many hops there are between you and server, when you are in dorm?
Or It may be CIA Jamming signals from your room. X_X

Check the output of
On the server next time your in the class room and compare it to the output ofCode:$ /sbin/ifconfig
on your vista machine in your dorm.Code:ipconfig
Your most likely on a different subnet.RHCE #100-015-395

Check your routing is correctly done on your router..
can you access your router via console or web applience?
If you can try pinging the server from your router.
