How to enable totem and vlc to play avi files(FC10)

    I have FC10
when i try to play any avi file the totem player flashes this error Video codec 'DivX 5' is not handled. You might need to install additional plugins to be able to play some types of movies. I've installed the latest codecs in the necessary directory but still not workin.while playin flash files it gives this
Video codec '0x0' is not handled. You might need to install additional plugins to be able to play some types of movies.
I've installed vlc(using yum) it also doesnt seem to play avi .i am not able to give the error description though but the issue was related to xvid

Hmmm. I'm running CentOS 5.3 and have not had this problem - installing VLC fixed any missing codecs. You might also try installing ffmpeg if you haven't already. My best guess is that something is mis-configured, such as where the vlc, totem, mplayer tools are getting their codecs. I play all sorts of avi files, from xvid, divx, mpeg4, etc. Also, wmf, wmv, asf, mkv, m4v, whatever. I don't remember when I found a format my system doesn't handle.

    Well you got options here.
Its better to install ffmpeg with gstreamer.
Go to GStreamer: open source multimedia framework , donwload and install gstreamer, and ffmeg, bad, ugly, good plugins of gstreamer..will support almost all media formats on your desktop.

Or other is Xine. to use Xine with Totem install totem-xine package.
    Never make any misteaks.

    totem still not working

guys Ive tried installing the ffmpeg as well as the necessary good bad ugly plugins of gstreamer
but still not working.its still flashing the same errors.
Also i would like to mention after installing the codecs ,plugins etc the mplayer is able to play all files but the required apps are not ! which does mean that the misconfig thing might not be true??
    what can we do next??

Well, I don't have the bad or ugly plugins, though I do have the good gstreamer plugins installed. Just about everything works for me even so.
