This is usually a problem with your DNS server taking too long to resolve IP addresses. Most web pages have tonnes of hidden pieces/scripts to get from many different places, which adds a lot to the time to load pages. If your DNS server is slow, or your primary DNS server is not available, then the TCP/IP stack has to timeout before switching to the alternate DNS server, and I think it will do this for each link it's trying to access. Hence your really slow speeds. So, check /etc/resolv.conf. You might have to reorder the nameserver entries, or add a new one to it that you know will respond more efficiently. FWIW, I have 5 in my list; 2 from my ISP, 2 from Bell Atlantic, and 1 to my router. Sometimes when I experience slow page loading, I'll check which is fastest and switch the entries around. That usually bumps my browser performance back to acceptable levels.

Another thing you can do is to enable a DNS server on your local machine or network that can cache the name/IP entries as they are fetched, but it still has to get them from an external server, so initially the browser will be slow, although it will speed up over time as more of the frequently used pages get cached locally.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Setup a simple Caching Transperent Proxy on your local network.

my opinion on browser is, you should also try opera. firefox is also good but opera have a bit faster engine.
    Never make any misteaks.
