Question Using SNMP to monitor status of remote hosts

    Hi team,

Relative linux novice here, and this is my first time posting. I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to implement a monitor for 3 windows servers running an important web application.

Basically I want a linux box to sit there and attempt to GET a webpage from each of the 3 windows boxes I'm every 1 second. If it fails X amount of times in Y minutes I want it to send an SNMP trap to raise a critical alarm saying the host is down.

Basically I've got a working version of Net-SNMP on my RHEL box but from what I can see it doesn't have this function built-in. I note that MRTG works along similar lines but is more for monitoring traffic to a host rather than availability.

Does anyone know a common solution to this issue? Am I approaching it from the wrong angle? Any help will be very welcome!

    Thanks in advance, Ben

I'd go with nagios, it is well documented, so you wont have to reinvent the wheel.
