How can I make mplayer as my default player in fedora 7

It depends on the desktop environment you're using. GNOME or KDE? In either case, there is an option in the settings or preference menu to associate different file types with a particular program. You can also right click on a video file, select open with, select mplayer, and there should be a little check box to select "always open with"
