    Installing redhat linux

    Hi all,
I am eager to start working with linux on my laptop and I want to know if I can install redhat on my hp laptop (hp dv2911us). If yes, what version of redhat can I use and is there a set of instructions that would help me install redhat on my laptop.

    Thanks in advance

    Vijay

    Welcome to the forums!

Generally speaking, your hardware will be best supported under the later releases of any distribution that you should try. The last free version of Red Hat (version 9) came out in March of 2003 so it might not be the best version for your hardware. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 is out now, but it isn't free. You can run the latest version of Fedora, or CentOS should you want a free substitute for Red Hat.

As for installation instructions, most Linux installers are self-guided now and are quite intuitive, and easy to install.

Hope you have fun with it.

I agree with ozar and donaldfarkas, if you must install Redhat products then I think you should use Fedora 10. Here is a very cool and helpful link to help you along your journey if you should decide to use Fedora 10.

I would agree with above view. redhat used mainly at work place.
You can try Fedora 10 or Mandriva 2009 or Debian Lenny , Ubuntu .

On install steps - linux installation is very simple - be careful while doing partition always choose "custom partitioning" and nothing else, just read content available on the installation screens that's more than enough

If you really need installation guide, choose your distro and google for it else post your questions here.

    All the best

You can wait 20 days for Fedora 11 to be released.
It is not a simple incremental upgrade like Ubuntu 9.04 over 8.10.
Fedora development is running with the brakes broken, always on the edge!!
Just take a look at the feature list of 6 months development. It is really astonishing.
