[SOLVED] Black Screen on Reboot - Fedora 10 after ATI install
Hi folks
I've finnaly moved to Linux ! I'm loving the experience ! for 1 month now I dont turn on my windows PC !
Now I run into a road bump! 1 st one !!!!
I need your help guys !
I have Fedora 10 and it has been running flawlessly !
Dont know why I decided to to install the bloody ATI drivers for my Radeon 9000 as described in fedorafaq.org/#radeon The Unofficial Fedora FAQ MISTAKE
After rebuilding the kernel as stated (it gave a lot of error messages like "I/O dev error ... etc etc" I dont know if it is normal or not... ) I hit REBOOT
it booted into a black screen
I started looking the internet for answers (on another machine)
this is what I've tryed so far with no success:
1. pressed ctr+alt+F2 ( F1 does nothing) and logged as root
2. as stated on another thread on this forum I did "system-config-display"
it does boot in graphics mode - in the Hardware tab is: Monitor: HP Video Card ATI Tech... Radeon 9000
Press "ok" and it says it created new xorg.conf
3. in xorg.conf the line Driver "radeon" is there
4. If I type startx I boot into nice graphics mode as root and everything looks normal
but there are some limitations, if I try to switch user it tells me "unable to start a new display"
5. I logout and reboot only to go back to the same black screen
6. Again I press ctr+alt+F2 log as root and the file xorg.conf now has Driver "fglrx"
Where did it came from ?????
7 Something created a new xorg.conf.livna-config-backup
8. I tryed entering "fglrx-config-display disable"
9 I tryed "yum remove kmod-fglrx" and it did remove the package
10 If I try startx after a black screen boot it tells me "fatal server error no screens found"
still it boots into black screen
something keeps replacing the good xorg.conf with a one with "fglrx" in it at boot
please help me I dont want to go back to windows
and I already have a lot of personal stuff migrated to fedora
thanx a lot everyone

Hi and Welcome !
Set Driver "vesa" in xorg.conf file.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Thank you !
I solved the problem !
I have Fedora running again ! I'm very impressed on how far Linux has come
Will post here my solution it may help others
Unfortunatly I also tryed substituting "vesa" befora but didn't help
the problem is that xorg.conf kept beeing "rebuilt" or "recreated" by the failed
ATI instalation
I solved the problem from the point I was in my initial post by
logging in as root and remving any remaining associated packages of fglrx
that wore still installed
after that I didCode:yum remove fglrx*
it generated a xorg.conf.new that I moved to /etc/X11 renaming itCode:X -configure
of course
thats it! On reboot it started normaly
I'm going to keep the actual driver and not mess around with it again
Cheers all
Linux is great, Fedora is great
