If you don't need video support, I like pidgin - it supports just about any IM protocol known. BEST is a very subjective call. What's best for me, might not be best for you.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Try pidgin then. It is available on just about all package managers for current (or near current) distributions.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!
