Boot to 'init 3' and confirm that the nvidia kernel module for the kernel you are using is present. Also, confirm which nvidia rpm's are install currently, 'rpm -qa | grep -i nvidia'. If possible backup your xorg.conf and run the nvidia configuration utility, 'nvidia-xconfig'. After this is completed try rebooting or switching to 'init 5'.

Note: If the nvidia kernel module is not present for the current kernel try booting into a previous kernel and see if that works.

Let us know how it goes!

Did you try the 'nvidia-xconfig' utility under the new kernel? How about confirming that the nvidia modules exist for the new kernel?

Ok, does the kmod-nvidia package version match the new kernel version? If not try getting it.
