What directory should I be downloading and saving stuff to?

is it better to create seperate directories in :/home

and then just unpack and install software from there?????

or should I be creating directories and downloading and installing software to

    :/usr/local/share

and upack it and install from there?

I haven't figured out the linux directory structure yet and I like things to be organized.

    Thanks!! I am a noob

i think it's more down to personal preferance.

for me i have a 'temp' directory where everything gets downloaded to, for one i know where it is and two i can then take it from there with what to do next.

This is the normal "UNIX" style...

/var/tmp - yours to do what you want, good for unpacking stuff and installing from there, don't forget to clean up after you
/opt or /usr/local - where you install your "personal" stuff, i.e. not system stuff

About where to download stuff I suggest creating a "download" dir in your $HOME...

( I also keep a "tmp" there where I test stuff and (sometimes) cleans up after me...)

    Cheers

    Jonas
