    One is brown and the other is blue.

    Seriously, the differences are way too numerous to list here. Both are Desktop Environments and do many of the same things albeit a little differently. You could Google for the differences as saivin recommended, but my advice would be to install both, run them and experience the differences for yourself.

    The toolkits they each use is probably the biggest difference. KDE likes to run using Qt and Gnome likes Gtk. Otherwise, they do about the same thing in the end, in that they both offer a full desktop environment from which to operate your computer.
