Swapping an ethernet card
Hello, I am Lee and I am a very new user of linux. My company has a linux firewall/router between the cable modem and two different internal networks. Years ago, an employee set up the firewall/router with Red Hat release 6.1, kernel 2.2.12-20. This employee no longer works at the company. I inherited the job of fixing the firewall/router because I know the most about computers here, but all of my knowledge is windows.
Everything has been running fine until this morning when the ethernet card on the firewall that goes to the cable modem quit working. I know it's the card because I swapped it with a known good card of the same brand on a windows box and the windows box stopped talking to the network.
My question is this: I know that ethernet cards have a MAC address and that no two are the same. When I swap the bad ethernet card out I need to tell the OS what the new MAC address of the card is, but I don't know how. Can anyone help?
Thank You,
Lee
