Fedora11 live cd installer wipes whole disk
Download Fedora11 32bit live cd and booted it using a pen drive. Within 70 seconds(after powering on), the boot process was over and I could see GUI. When I started the installer, it showed a warning saying hard disk needed reinitialisation. When I ignored this and went to partition step, I didn't see any existing partition, whole hard disk was shown as free space.I exited the installer here.
Also, earlier GParted in Fedora 10 wasn't able to detect any partition and showed the same disk layout(ie free space only). There was one NTFS partition, one for swap and 4 ext3 partitions on the disk.
The partitions were working while I was using fedora11 live from pen drive, but when I restarted the computer, all the partitions disappeared. Now no partition is left and I only see disk as sda
. Anyone having any idea why it happened? Is it possible to recover any data?

If you did not reformat the disk, it may be possible to recover it. It is possible that restoring the Master Boot Record (MBR) will fix it. You would have to boot from a Windows installation disk, and enter the recovery mode.
I don't remember the specifics on doing this, as I gave up on Windows several years ago. And the process may be different with Vista. If no one here knows exactly how, you may need to seek help from a Windows help forum. I am sure that they will chastise you for even trying Linux!
To defend Linux, I booted the Fedora 11 LiveCD, and had no such problem. I did find the LiveCD to be quite limited on the installation options, so I used the DVD to install. Of course, I have done many Linux installs, so I know what to look for and what not to do. This shouldn't have happened to you, and may even be a bug in the software.Paul

^I think the MBR was intact . When I started my computer, grub prompt was shown to me but find /boot/grub/stage1 showed error message. Also tried using trial version of a data recovery software but it wasn't able to detect any partiion either.
Sacrificed my 2GB of data which wasn't backed up, and reinstalled everything. Fedora11 installer also worked without any trouble. Took just 7.45 minutes(using flash drive).
So thread may be closed now.
