Newbie with Red hat
I inherited a red hat server release 5 and we are trying to figure out if we need to install anti virus on it. We have license for Sophos and the server is used mainly for file sharing through samba.
Is it common practice to install it on the server, and is there guidelines as to the install?
Any help is appreciated

Google: sophos linux install
While normally AV on Linux is not needed/overkill, your usage is one where it is a *good* idea.
You have XX users copying data to/from this fileserver (I am assuming from Windows machines.) That means if one WKS has an infected file, the Samba server is in an ideal spot to catch that infection before it is spread to other machines. Thus AV scanning at this central location is ideal.
It's also good to know that your scanning machine (RHEL) can't get infected by the bugs it's scanning for.

What HROAdmin26 said. As to guidelines, you need to consult the Sophos documentation and visit their web site for such. Here is their web page for their Linux AV product: Anti-Virus for Linux - Sophos
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

like HROAdmin26 sad... its good to have one in case you have infected files on the server, in that way you protect your users.
