problem playing back VCD on Fedora 10
I was having problem playing back VCD on Fedora 10. I have installed the necessary libraries from rpmfusion free and nonfree repos and am able to play DVD and MP3 on Totem Movie Player 2.24.3 but the VCDs just do not play. In fact some VCDs automount whereas some do not and fail to mount with mount command too. I either case the VCD won't play. Using tiersen's advise I executed "totem vcd://1" and totem played the 1st chapter from the VCD but I had to execute "totem vcd://2" to play the 2nd chapter. This is rather frustrating. Interestingly this command works even with such VCDs that do not mount. If totem plays VCDs by issuing a command from CLI why does it not play from its own GUI? Can someone help out?

That's a very good question but unfortunatly I don't have the answer.
I think VLC can play VCDs so you can give it a try

Boy! I haven't played a VCD or SVCD for some time. Like tiersen suggested, have you tried VLC?

No I have not tried VLC. Perhaps because I do not want to clutter up my system with too many progs essentially meant to do the same job and also if I remember correctly the original post said that VLC was also giving the same problem.
The VCD playback is not really a critical issue since I can atleast play them with totem vcd://1 but the question is essentially academic. Why should playback happen from the CLI and not from the GUI.
PS: I am located in India and VCDs/SVCDs are still very popular and many movie titles are available only in those formats.

VLC has support for many more audio and video formats than most Linux video players. With it I am able to play QuickTime, Windows Media, Mastroika (mkv), and many, many others that the others won't play. Anyway, it could be how you have Totem configured. Since I don't usually use it myself I cannot advise you there, but look thru the options/preferences of the GUI and you might find something related that will fix your problem.
