    Extra Credit Help

    Hey guys,

I am new to both Linux and these forums. I am taking Linux classes at ITT Technical Institute and my professor challenged us to take control of his box. He has given us access via SSH to his box, but our accounts are very limited. I was wondering were you would start (ie is there a way to gain more privileges, somehow copy the shadow file)

    Any info will be appreciated,
    Thanks!

There are several ways that you can gain access to the root account but most require physical access to the computer.

Ozar has written a little tutorial on recovering root passwords, which you may find useful...

Sorry, but it is a violation of the terms of use on this forum to help people with their school work, other than in the most general ways. Since this is a classroom exercise and challenge from your professor, you need to figure this out yourself. Just remember, Google is your friend!
