I recommend using Ubuntu Easy Peasy or Ubuntu Netbook Remix (official).

1.First you have to partition your hard disk. Decide how much space you want to give to Linux and how much to Windows.
2.Create a Live-USB of the above, using Unetbootin which runs on both Linux and Windows.
3.Using one of the above live-USB's partition your hard disk. You will need an NTFS partition for Windows, and for Linux 1 swap partition 1GB, 10GB type ext3 mount point / and as much as you want for /home ext3(/home is where your documents and videos are stored, like My Documents).
4.Install Windows first and Linux second. This way Linux will make you a bootloader to choose between the 2. You'll need a USB CD-Rom apparently for Windows. After you install everything you're good to go!!!
If you choose Ubuntu Netbook Remix, after the installation you'll probably want to install the restricted-extras.

Attention: If you have the SSD model, choose partition type ext2 and not ext3. In this case make only the swap and / partitions.

Installing XP on new acer laptop having linpus linux

I am not able to boot XP CD from CD Drive. I tried entering BIOS setting but del command is not working. My laptop have Linpus linux and its acer 1530. Is there any way to Boot XP from CD drive ? I read through this forum there is no need to delete linux, XP will take care of it and once XP is installed I can Install GUI based linux too.
    Please help me out

    Thanks

    parted magic

I havent used parted magic b4 but you might be able to use it to create a partion in ntfs format and then load the xp cd and select that pation. be careful though you must read the directions carefull or you might accidently wipe the drive. if you have got any thing important on it you can just install xp and then linux later thats the easiest way. because im new im not allowed to post so youll have to google it.

The XP cd can do partion for me,right? I m only concern about I am not able to boot through CD drive. Is it due to it require special command? I used del,f1,f2 etc.

How can I boot from CD drive rather than harddisc.

    Thanks

I assumed you had an Aspire One.
What is the screen size? The distros I mentioned are for 10" or smaller screens.
Go for the regular Ubuntu or any other distro you like in this case. XP installation will let you make partitions. Just make 4 of them in the appropriate sizes and you can easily turn them to ext3 and swap during Linux installation.

During boot doesn't it show which button to press? Apart from del, f1 and f2 it could be f10,11 or f_something...

Boot with the Ubuntu Live-CD and type this in terminal and post the output:
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    df -k
    -l is a small L, not I.

Yes, you can download Ubuntu from here:

    Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu

There is also a link on that page that will allow you to request/order the disk, and they will ship it to you at no charge.
