I have brought a new Seagate 500GB HDD. But in linux it shows ~478GB and in windows it shows 476GB. Anyone, could you please explain, why their is discrepancy?...

    Actually, they only hold about 500,000,000,000 bytes (more or less) which when divided by the size of a gigabyte (1024x1024x1024 bytes) produces 465.66GB, which is close to what Windows and Linux show. Since drives are a fixed number of cylinders of N sectors of M bytes each, you will never get exactly 500,000,000,000 bytes, but a bit more in all likelihood. IE, in disc marketing terminology 1 gigabyte < 1GB
    Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
