Welcome to the forums!
Fedora Core 6 is no longer maintained or supported by the Fedora folks, so you might have better luck by upgrading to Fedora 10, or better yet, Fedora 11, then installing xmms or some other player using the YUM package tool.
However, you might be able to install some player of your choice by compiling it from source. Here's a howto you can follow should you choose that route:
