fedora 9 is outdated and unsupported, you will likely have less issues with the latest version of fedora, which is fedora 11

The fact you are running an AMD processor likely has little to do with why you cannot boot Linux. Either the bios needs configuring or updating, or your boot/install disc is faulty. Verify the md5 checksum of the disc first, then make sure the laptop is configured to boot from CD, and then check if there is a bios update available for these laptops.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
