    Unhappy yum problem

    i am new to linux...
    i have installed fedora 8..
i know its old but..its the only dvd i have...
and now i started learnig the linux...

i learnt how rpm and yum work...
i have installed some softwares by downloading the rpms

but whenever i try to do it directly through the yum...(yum install vlc)etc...
    first step its fine..
    it ill download primary.sqlite.bz2
    donno wat it is though

then next step it shows up error...(always)

    http: //rpm. livna.org/ fedora/8/i386/yum/stable/repodata/repomd.xml:[Errno 14] HTTP Error 404: Not Found

apparantly there is some problem with the livina repository

and even if i copy that url and goto to that it shows error...

    wat to do???
    thanx a lot in advance...

    Welcome to the forums!

I'm pretty that sure all support for Fedora 8 ceased in January of 2009, so the Fedora 8 mirrors probably don't work any longer. You can download a later version of Fedora and the mirrors should work for you if you have a working internet connection.

You are correct ozar, I think support for FC9 is coming to an end as we speak.

Fedora 11 is probably the best alternative if you want to run Fedora because it will have the longest shelf life, so to speak. Like MikeTbob said above, even Fedora 9 is already headed toward the distro graveyard.

You'll probably have to search the web for the RPM you need because I don't run Fedora and don't have an RPM for VLC. If you try to use a later version of VLC, you'll probably run into some serious dependency issues because of the older version of Fedora being used.

Best still to upgrade to a more modern version of Fedora, in my opinion.

    RPM Search
You should be able to find a version for Fedora 9 if you are willing to do a little searching.
