Unhappy ATI 128 Rage Pro. Resolution resets to low value after installation

I have a Dell with - ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF

    Monitor is Acer AL1916W ( 19" wide screen )

    Code:
    lspci
correctly identifies the card. On initial installation I get great resolution 1440 x 900 but after second reboot this morning it is dropped to 800 x 600 and I have no options to set it higher. Given the original install properly set the drivers I know it is all possible. I don't understand why a boot the next day would reset otherwise excellent settings? I also don't know where the boot obtains these settings as there is no xorg.conf file at all. Prior attempt at creating one made booting impossible so we had to wipe out that file which returned me back to square one.

Initial boot log shows settings correctly, subsequent logs show only low res is being loaded.

I am a Linux Newbie so I have no clue where these settings are saved absent any fine in X11 for them?

I went through this once on the Fedora forum and finally re-installed the OS after wiping the HDD ( nothing important there, just the time )

I really don't want to consider re-installing each time the resolution goes to crap so would love some help in finding why and fixing it.

    Thanks guys and gals !

    Cool I don't understand this....

I re-booted and this time it restored the high resolution screen?

It is annoying to have it constantly changing it's "mind" each boot. Is there a way to find where the correct settings are then "lock" them in so they are always loaded?

    Follow Up.

I looked at the log again after rebooting with a good resolution. I can see the settings loaded and the drivers used. What about deleting any other drivers from that directory that do not apply to my system so F.11 has ONLY the correct drivers to select from?
