I have to stop you right there!

Despite the misleading number, Red Hat 9 is very old - from 2002 if I recall correctly. You might be better off using a light modern distro such as Xubuntu, Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux. You will have a hard time getting anything to install on Red Hat 9 as there is no support and no repositories available for it.

With regards to your network card, I have the same one. If you use a modern distro it'll likely be supported out of the box as it is Atheros based - Xubuntu will be best for this. It's possible to get it working with Puppy or Damn Small but it'll be a more manual process. What I can guarantee is that it'll be next to impossible on Red Hat 9 as it uses the older kernel 2.4 and all of the Atheros drivers have been written for 2.6. It'd be like trying to get your wifi working on NT 3.11

    Thanks for the reply

Thank you.....If you could lead me to a bunch of distros that might be less taxing on a newbie....with very little experience.....I'd hate to throw that laptop in the salvage yard....

    All help is greatly appreciated

You can get Xubuntu here. It is one of the most newbie friendly distributions. Burn the iso image into a cd, boot with it to see that it works and then install it. If everything goes OK, post again to give you instructions about installing flash, vlc, codecs, etc...

If you manage to get Puppy Linux to recognize your wireless, flash videos will probably play smoother, since Puppy is a lot faster than Xubuntu. It shouldn't be too hard (if the drivers are in the kernel), you 'll just have to use the network tool of Puppy and tell it to search for your wireless adapter.

All seems to be working smoothly....which distro do you use??? I tried linux along time ago....and it was sort of difficult to learn....so I quit....I am surprised how everything has changed.....especially the downloading and installation of software....the search for appropriate software....it has gone extremely well...my wireless strength is a liilte low....but I can deal with that.....do you and bigtom rodney....stay in this forum....or some other? Again thanks for your help
