[SOLVED] Enabling nvidia driver failed
Hi everyone
I've got FC11 and I installed the nvidia kmod driver using the steps described here:
Fedora 11 Nvidia driver will not work | Fedora | Linux Tutorial
At some point it says to type glxinfo | grep direct in order to verify that the Kernel Module is functioning
. The error I get when I do this is: Error: unable to open display
I decided to ignore that and continued with the rest of the commands described in that link with no errors and when I rebooted the machine I got this error in the boot.log file:
Enabling the nvidia driver: /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions: line 513: 1262 Segmentation fault “$@” [FAILED]
Has anyone come across this? If yes, please advise.
Thank you

I always install the rpm downloaded from nVidia instead of the one provided in the package manager - better results with that I've found. Anyway, download the driver from the nVidia web site and try installing that. If you do, switch to run-level 3 (cli - no gui), otherwise it will complain about x-windows running and refuse to install.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Also, the nvidia drivers won't work/install if you have the xen kernel enabled, just FYI. They don't support xen, which is why I use VirtualBox for a VMM.

Thanks a lot for your help Rubberman.
I used the rpm package from Nvidia and no more complaining boot up errors.
Thank you
