How to run new kernel version

Hi i am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux on my server, and i am very new to this operating system. I am not fully comfortable with the updating process through the Red Hat Network server with all the channels. The Red Hat Network website has these updates as well. So i have just been downloading all the packages available because i have no idea which not to download.

I am used to a microsoft windows update, so this process is not very clear. Also the updater says that i am running a certain version of a kernel and i have a newer version available and all i have to do is reboot to try it out. how would i do this. i have rebooted the system multiple times and it is not changing. i appreciate all the info.

RedHat releases kernel updates as RPM packages, so you may want to read the link about installing package updates.

RH has a handy RHEL Admin Guide that includes a whole section on *upgrading the kernel.*
