dns uniquness in linux help
Hey Guys,
We have a nameserver(DNS) on freebsd which the other linux admin works on.
We had switched webservers and that created a problem to an ftp user who uploads her pics to our webserver.
www.sitename.com/~username/ is her account
and she uploads at ftp://sitename.com
since we moved the server she cant do that, now i thought of this which the other admin says its not possible but i dont believe so.
what if i add a dns alias entry as (cname)
www.sitename.com/~username/ point to old server
ftp://sitename.com point to old server
www.sitename.com (new website main domain) point to new server
can i do this?
Please assist
Thanks
RJ

You cannot do that. DNS service is only host-to-ip or ip-to-host.

A friend of mine had 2 domain ips and using one server he had it such as,
ip1 - www.sitename.com
ip2 - www.sitename.com/anothersite/
how did he do that in virtualhosts?

Don't know why don't you ask your friend. But I do know it's not DNS doing this.
