Dual Boot Cloned Drive Will Not Boot

I have a dual boot setup that offers Windows default boot or Linux Fedora 3 Linux if selected.

I cloned the HD to a new HD using EZGig II S/W f54rom Apricorn. When I install the new drive in my Dell C610 laptop it will not boot into the Grub option screen mentioned above. I get a screen full of the word Grub - line after line and continuing.

Any help in resolving this so that I can get to the Dual Boot screen as normal. I understand that I may be able to there using a Rescue Installation Disk. I do not have such disk and cannot find one for the Fedora 3 that I have have. I am NEW to Linux (very newbie) and this forum so any help would be good.

    Thx
    Dave

Do you have any Linux livecd? You may just have to reinstall grub or at worst reconfigure it. For that you will need a livecd, but almost any one should do.

Thanks for the reply. I will try and gert a Livecd somewhere. I have had problems getting CD info on usable Linux stuff. I'll do another search and see if I can obtain one. Again thanks.

Did you check for Apricorn documentation for EasyGig II? I noticed on their website that this software is "not for sale" and everything else seems to be. Do you have a utility partition? You didn't mention which version of windows you have. Did your windows Fedora 3 dual boot work, were you able to boot into both prior to the clone. Fedora 3 is outdated and if you are new to Linux, it would probably be better to use something current. Fedora is at version 10 with 11 soon to come.

First yancek Thanks for the reply.

I purchased the Apricorn Upgrade kit which included a HDD case and Software (EZGIGXII) and manual to clone my old drive.

I have Swap partition, Linux drive D partition and a bunch of unallocated space and the WinXP C drive partition on my Dell L attitude laptop. No apparent Utility partition.

The Fedora 3 dual boot works fine and defaults (3 second) to Window boot-up and options correctly to Fedora Linux. I have not used the Linux much except to look at it. But, retain it for future learning time and reason permitting.

Will Fedora current Live CD work to try to rescue the new HDD? Unfortunately my CD burner is failing to get recognized when trying to create a ISO CD. So burning a bootable CD is a tough play at the moment. I haven't had much luck finding a CD supplier with Live CD on it.

I'm not familiar with Apricorn products so don't know if that might have been a problem. You should be able to use a current Fedora CD to install Grub. You can use other distros such as knoppix and can purchase a CD for a minimal amount, see this site:

    KNOPPIX per Post

When you cloned your drive, did you copy the entire drive including the master boot record? If you get a Live CD, run the command 'fdisk -l' as root user so you can get and post partition information.

I hate to be spoon fed but my ignorance of Linux requires extended help.

The EZGIG S/W is supposed to copy everything bit for bit. Their customer service says that Dual boots are sometimes problematic for them. My suspicion is that it sets up to boot from the wrong hd probably 0,0 instead of I think the original 0,1.

I looked at the CD sites suggested but I am confused about which disk(s) I need.
This dumb Dell has only a CD R/W and DVD movie player that seems to NOT recognize DVD data disks. So, I may be limited to CDs only.

    Appreciate the guidance.

Are you trying to run the cloned drive in the same system that the old drive ran in, or is it different?
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

The old drive was replaced inside the Dell with the new cloned drive and then I attempted to boot the Dell normally and got the screen full of "grub" and no dual boot screen???

I am now trying to get a compatible Fedora Live cd on CD. My machine seems to have problems using ISO burning S/W.

    Regards
    Dave
