problem dual boot install?
Not sure where I am going wrong on this...
I have tried to install fedora 11 as a second OS (for dual boot on single hard drive) on two (different) laptops. One of the laptops is a panasonic cf-50 with ATI radeon mobility graphics integrated, the other is an HP tuffbook (nr3510 I believe), also with integrated ATI video. The cf-50 has previously been loaded with Fedora Core 10; win2K was just added via DVD (CD booting first); the tuffbook has had win2K (installed over XP) for a while. Both have free space created in windows (33, 25G respectively) to accommodate Fedora. Again, both machines are set to read from the CD drive. However,
though I have tried 2 different i386 fedora 11 iso dvds (each downloaded and burned on different machines), on boot-up both machines literally ignore whichever dvd is in (cd/dvd drive). Nada. As if the disks weren't even in the drive, win2K merrily loads.
I have a third fedora 11 downloading...but does anyone have any idea what is going on/how to solve? Perhaps if I created a (floppy) boot disk (I am not sure about process on that one....and that would only work on the cf-50 as the other laptop has no floppy drive...:P )
Thanks for any assistance/words of wisdom.

Ate you burning those images as DATA or ISO? Sounds like you are just burning the file to the disk and you should be burning it as an image to the disk.

3 fedora 11 disks v 1 (working) fedora 10???
Robert,
Thanks for your attention,
I believe I have burned the .iso to the disk(s) -- have been successful in the past in doing so. In this case (these cases) the label "Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso" is clearly visible on the disk (as seen from win2K "My Computer").
I have successfully booted fedora core isos from this cd-50 CD/DVD drive in the past, and as well have booted from DVDs from both cd/dvd drives.
Addenda: I tried one more download/burn since writing -- that .iso dvd was also "ignored".
Dunno what is going on. Have dual booted win2K and linux when using 2+ HDs, but never tried to use both on one HD...wondering if connected to win2K setting?
OK, since writing I tried installing FC10 -- that disk is NOT ignored!
a. out of 3 disk downloads (onto different machines/platforms and burned on different burners), none works
b. something is up with fedora 11 .iso files????
c. ???????
while a. (above) is probably the most likely if hard to believe option, if indeed something else is up, any info would be appreciated. Am off to download/burn yet another disk...argh.Last edited by mghere; 08-27-2009 at 08:07 PM. Reason: additional info pertinent to post

On the download page, there usually are instructions on doing md5 checksum after download. Burn the file as an image with whatever software you use at a low speed. When you have done this and put the CD/DVD in the tray you should not see an iso file but several folders/files including one that just says Fedora.

Assume you are asking if I did a Checksum (Sha5sum) and telling me that a checksum is in the Fedora folder?
Is a good point.
I did a Checksum on one and Sha5sum on one other -- had a windows verifier for the third and that showed a different number, to be sure (download was interrupted so mebbe disk bad, yes).
Am downloading yet another disk -- have only windows to verify, so not sure about what results will mean, but whatever means, will certainly give Checksum a go, yes.
Thanks again

Yes. The instructions on what and how to check the download are usually on the download page. Haven't used Fedora for a while so I don't know.Assume you are asking if I did a Checksum
No! See above.telling me that a checksum is in the Fedora folder?
I have an old Fedora Core 6 CD. When I put it in the CD drive and mount it, I see five folders (one named Fedora) and 15 different files.
I have an OpenSuse 11.1 install CD. When I put it in the drive and mount it, I see three folders and twelve files.
What I am saying is that if you put your Fedora CD/DVD in the drive and view it under My Computer in windows, you should see folders/files not just one file with an iso extension. If that's the case, then you didn't burn as an image as Lazydog suggested.

When you look at the contents of the disc are you seeing one file or multiple directories?
If you are seeing the file as listed above when you look at the disc then you did not burn it correctly. The .iso is an image and must be burned to the disc as an image.
On the burner software under one of the menus there should be a 'Burn as disc image' or something like this. This is what you want to use to burn the iso to the disc.
