Did something and now cant ssh to server
Hey guys. WOW its been about a year since Ive been on here. god. anyway I have a quick question. So I was sshed into my server through a VPN, then realized I was connected to a VPN and closed the connection. Well I logged back into my server after the VPN closed and when "who" command was entered it showed root logged in twice. So I figured id try to disconnect the other session I had accidentally left open from the VPN. I beleive typed "skill -STOP -u root" (I know I know, should just have killed the user id that was displayed when I issued the who command) anyway, now me server does not respond to pings, and whenever I try to ssh to it, it just says connection refused. Any Ideas? Thanks guys.

Please restart your sshd service and make sure that there will be no firewall rules for the sshd server. and try to login

Ping may be off because ICMP response is often turned off for security reasons on many installs these days.
I believe you may have killed off more than you bargained for. If you cant log-in, you'll probably need a way to restart the machine. You could try ssh-ing in as a different user? Is any other service (e.g. telnet, vnc) running you can connect using?Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

Well, i cant restart sshd because I cant SSH to it. also it always responded to pings before any of this happened. And I dont even get the logon prompt. When I open up my SSH client and try to connect it just Says connection refused. I dont know how to bring the server down cleanly if I cant log in. Do you think a hard restart will fix the problem?

If you have physical access to the machine, pressing the power button will usually set up a clean shutdown. Otherwise, I don't think you have much choice, and a hard reset beckons. If you do that, if it's possible plug in a monitor and watch the bootup, look out for any errors.
