check if your syslog service is running or not???
# service syslogd status
if it's not running start it by
# service syslogd start
the make it to start at boot
# chkconfig syslogd onThere is nothing impossible, for everything is possible; the impossible only takes a bit longer than the possible.

It looks like syslog may be working because your log files are turning over and one has 60 bytes in it. Try this:
Try:
$ logger -p kern.alert "asdf12345"
$ grep -r asdf12345 /var/log/*
If grep finds an entry then it's logging properly.
What program are you trying to log? Sendmail? Make sure you are checking the right log path.
