Persistent ndiswrapper/ssb conflict under Fedora 11
Hi,
I'm a relatively new linux user and just bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 which seems to be fitted with a Broadcom BCM4315 wireless card (which is not supported by b43), and am now working with Fedora 11. I tried to get the wireless card running using ndiswrapper but got the apparently common problem of a conflict with the existing ssb driver.
I think I've tried all the common fixes described around the web, up to and including radically removing the ssb driver altogether (which fortunately didn't break USB or wired ethernet functions). Even this does not resolve the problem.
Could someone please attempt to list the most common fixes once again to see if I haven't missed anything? And does anyone know how a conflict can arise with a driver that isn't actually there any more?
Many thanks,
Thomas

Update: by using an older version of ndiswrapper the problem miraculously transforms itself into an equally persistent conflict with a driver named "wl" which seems to be completely undocumented. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Thanks again,
Thomas

Hello, and welcome to Linux Forums!
Your wireless uses the Broadcom-wl driver, so there is no reason to use NDISwrapper. You can install the broadcom-wl driver after enabling the RPMFusion repository. It will also install a kernel module.
Code:yum install broadcom-wl

Thanks! Actually, that was one of the first things I tried (even before ndiswrapper). No reaction at all from the wireless, doesn't show up in iwconfig.

Let's make sure what your hardware is and get some more info.
Read the sticky on Wireless Setup and post the requested info.

It is possible that the ssb module is interfering. It is sometimes used for the b44 NIC driver, which your NIC isn't using.
Try removing both drivers, then reloading the wl module. Do this with root privileges, by using the su command.
Enter your root password. It will remain hidden as you type it.Code:su Password:
Code:modprobe -r wl
Now reload the wl module.Code:modprobe -r ssb
See if the wireless is now recognized.Code:modprobe wl
Code:ifconfig
Code:iwconfig

Any more ideas?Code:Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for eth1... failed.

Go into the Network program and configure the wireless. Tell it to use NetworkManager and DHCP. You can find it in the main menu, or use this is command to start it.
Code:system-config-network
