Thanks, the lights are going on!
As I said, this is the simplest, most direct site I've found. Just about all the answers I need are dealt with in such fashion that I can see the overall picture where everything fits in.
The Unofficial Fedora FAQ tells very well how to installs apps in Linux. With much searching I could not find an answer to this question. I have Fedora Core 3 installed and working. Downloaded the FC-11-i686-Live-KDE.iso just now. Will I destroy FC3 (and - more important - other peripheral programs) when I install FC11 or will it simply upgrade? I know there is a "Repair an installation" in FC3's Linux install, but I don't know what it does. I'm thinking on the lines of a Firefox upgrade.
Maybe if you can add this in front of the program installation part.

Welcome to the forums!
Fedora Core 3 to Fedora 11 is too big of a leap for an upgrade, so you will need to backup any important data, and then do a fresh install of Fedora 11. You can then restore any data to the new system.oz

Yep, its possible for there to be breakage even going up one distro, so you should definitely back up anything thats important to you and start fresh.
