Boot up F2 wants CURRENT PASSWORD.

Made all the mistakes, re-installed several times, got the sticky and I think I've got the hang of it mostly. This password is not the passphrase for Linus file encryption, nor the root or user password. Those work ask expected. Just out of curiosity I hit F2 on boot up and got a DOS-type dialog looking for a CURRENT PASSWORD. I cannot get into my BIOS setup (not that I really have to at this stage). So it looks like there is a total of four passwords to know about in Linux.

I got this when my Acer A110 was still on Linpus (Fedora scion) and it seems this stuck in memory somewhere or it may be some random (unknown) quantity. Any ideas/ pointers, please?

One other thing. Reading forums work, but this one still has me beat. I have an installation disc which I can see on KDE (Dolphin), but it won't install as per one possible option. I can also cd into /home/media, but cd /EIO2007 (Evermore Integrated Office on my DVD writer) gives "No such file or directory". This is now in FC11.

I actually did get it to work on FC3, where there is a choice of three consoles and the quirks in the apps gave me some feedback like /home/media/sda0cdrecorder (sic). Switched between consoles and tried these lines - actually got into the right directory and installed it! OK, so that was a fluke. FC11 does not react like that, so I'm stuck. Can't even teach myself anything here. It must be some variant in approach or entry, but I just don't get it. Where to look? What to do? Just some ideas , please.

Reason for Evermore? I was looking for a cheap alternative to MS Office, tripped over it. Virtually exact clone. No learning curve and - and - and it come in both Win and Linux flavors. On the same disc. I can transfer spreads between the Win Fuji and the Linux Acer on USB stick (for a start). This is the honey to catch Windows flies! One format for "Word", "Excel" and "Access" apps in one binder - like the old Gold Disk Office on the Amiga A500. It is not free in either sense, but OOO is Hard Work in comparison. Home US$15 and closed source.

    No, they don't pay me.

You're saying the BIOS is password locked? This doesn't have anything to do with linux. The aspire one has a bios recovery routine, though.

For your other problem, I assume the CD drive isn't mounted. I believe KDE doesn't automount the disc upon insertion. If click on the drive from Dolphin, it should mount and open it.

    You're right first count.

Yes, the BIOS has nothing to do with Linux. Realized that as I posted the query. But thank you for the response and the info on how to get it set up again.

Mounting the DVD, now there's the rub. Sorry, I did not include this info. Whenever I did a mount action I got a response that it is already mounted. So, on all counts I got locked out. I know one can sometimes get one work around going whereas another will get stuck. What baffles me is how will the GUI (KDE/Dolphin) show it when it is not mounted? Yet, when I use the Konsole it says; "I can't remember".

What don't I know about KDE or what "gets lost" when I use the Konsole? There must be a missing link or cd /EIO2007 enters at some different point to KDE. Maybe I must try that whacky path again, the one FC3 threw at me. Will let you know.

Anyway, don't feel so lost anymore, grey stuff's kicking in again. Thanks.

    Second thoughts, KDE mount.

As you said, KDE will auto mount and open - which it does. But is this then proprietary to KDE and not system wide? Or is this KDE mount the factor of exclusion when it comes to the Konsole? Does the OS hog it or is it file locking?

    Bug?

Yet in FC3 I did get a work around and did get it installed. Then again, if I look at the /home/media/sda0cdrecorder/EIO2007 path it seems the way the paths are handled has something more to it. Now you see it ...

No, a mounted drive is a mounted drive, it's not dependent on the desktop environment.

Re-reading your first post, I think you just have the path wrong.
    cd /EIO2007
If this is what you're typing, it won't work. You're telling it to look for a directory under the root filesysem. I'm a little confused as well, because /home/media isn't the default mount point. Most likely it should be
    Code:
    cd /media/EIO2007
If you are already in the media directory, then
    Code:
    cd EIO2007
    without the / before EIO2007.

    Ouch! Right again.

Yes, a mounted drive is just that, no GUI. Also thanks for the cd EIO2007 no slash. Thanks, you are really helping to articulate my knowledge of the system. The most painful is that I did read the original work on UNIX kernels - but that was some time ago.

And again, I wasn't that deep into the Amiga A500. This kind of support was non-existent then and I didn't connect the WorkBench (Desktop) to the hardware quite in this way.

Oh yes, to what extent would those ROM kernel and other manuals still be relevant in terms of things like the current subject? Can't even remember whether that was a dinkum UNIX system. I know it was written in C. Maybe a good idea to dig it up in any case.

Looks I got work to do.

    The /home/media thing.

I got this from the tree view in Dolphin - triple checked it - cd /home, ls & cd /media, ls worked.

/ is root yes, but I thought "/" in UNIX is just the separator from there on in - seems it remains dots and crosses...

OK, so it seems I'll just have to keep doing just that.

    Finishing this thread. Solved.

Had some other issues with FC11 - didn't want to start up, reported some trouble and then did not want to re-install. Abnormal exits and so on.

Reformatted the HDD with FC3 and let it continue installing anyway. All done, I tried to install EIO2007. Did a mount /dev/cd0 and got "/dev/cd0 already mounted on /media/cdrecorder". OK, it's definitely there.

Did cd /media/recorder, then cd /Linux - "no such directory".
Did cd /media/recorder, then cd Linux - and got the prompt in that directory.
Did ./setup as per Evermore help file and it is installed on FC3.
Seems it will work if you do cd /media/cdrecorder/Linux all in one go.

Now I just have to do this in FC10 maybe. Read FC11 has several issues all on its own.

Thanks to reed9 for patience. This issue is solved.
