Hi i tried putting xmms on my computer with fedora 8 through yum...so i can play mp3s then i got an error on xmms saying that red hat stopped letting xmms play mp3s...so now im trying to install xine but everytime i try to get an install running it starts downloading something called development and then starts downloading something named 3396a378485c6b5130f8a6328
# yum install xine
3396a378485c6b5130f8a6328 100% |=========================| 368 kB 00:04
3396a378485c6b5130f8a6328 100% |=========================| 8.0 kB 00:00
3396a378485c6b5130f8a6328 100% |=========================| 192 kB 00:00
but each one takes roughly 45 minutes to run....then it keeps running the same file

Fedora 8 is no longer officially supported. Do you know what repository it was trying to install XMMS from?
To see a list of all repositories set up on your system, use this command.
Code:yum repolist

You won't be able to use YUM for installing or updating Fedora 8. It is an older version, and no longer supported by the repositories that you listed. You will have to install things manually, either by finding the .rpm packages on the internet, or by compiling from source code.
A source for the xmms-mp3 rpm can be found here:
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3?stat...&dist[]=54
If you are new, and this is a recent install, I urge you to download and install the latest version of Fedora. The current version is Fedora 11, and it is supported by the Fedora repositories.
Fedora Project
You should then enable the RPM Fusion repository, following the instructions on the web site.
RPM Fusion - RPM Fusion
Configuration - RPM Fusion
Install multimedia programs that are offered from the RPM Fusion repository, as they will have the components such as mp3 support available.Last edited by waterhead; 09-26-2009 at 01:34 AM.

Hey thanks a lot man...im going to get Fedora 11 after work today and throw that on here see if it doesnt work out better

That will make things a lot easier. As you already know, Fedora doesn't include any proprietary software. That is why support for mp3 files isn't included. I would not install any multimedia programs until after you have enabled the RPM Fusion repository.
An XMMS clone, with more current development is Audacious. Give that a try.Paul

ok i like audacious but my only problem with it is that it wont play mp3's...its plays wav's and most other types....im pretty sure it doesnt have anything to do with the plug-in because i when i try to install the lame file it says that it is already installed
Package lame-3.98.2-3.fc11.i586 already installed and latest version
i did used to have amarok when i ran fedora 8 and it would play mp3a....but now they dont have any skins so it just looks ugly...pretty much all i want is something like windows media player....where you have a library you can store your music in...and then have skins so it would look like audacious....kind of how xmms used to be...is there anything out there like that? or does anyone know a way to change the amarok theme

For a simpler KDE music player, there is juk. Don't think it's themeable though.
There's a nice gtk app called gmusicbrowser.
Many people, including myself, swear by MPD. There are many different clients available for it. Does take a little setup though.
