    how to find the last shutdown and startup in red hat 4.2.
    is there any log file for that?

    Look in the /var/log folder, that is where most of the logs are kept. Depending on what it is you are looking for, it could be in the kern.log, dmesg or messages. There are also other logs, but my boot log is empty.
