    Update RH to 5.3 o 5.4

    hi guys

my RH server 5.0 is having some networking issues and I found version 5.3 and 5.4 have some updated versions for my NIC drivers as well as the Bond Channel Driver.

I would to know is it OK going to 5.0 to 5.4? or there is a way to go to 5.1 - 5.2 and 5.3 and 5.4 for security reasons...I don't want my system not workin after updating to the latest 5.4 If I do 5.0 -> 5.4 right away.

is it possible going version by version?
or I can update to 5.4 without any problems just using yum update?

    thanks a lot

I can't guarantee that you will not have any problems, but yes, its possible to upgrade from 5.0 to 5.4. Its the same release which has been patched for security updates and only a few new features and drivers have been added.

    Hello,

I can't guarantee that you will not have any problems too, it depends on your software and hardware. For example I updated RHEL 4 and RHEL 5 servers several times with Oracle and I didn't face with any problems. If it's possible you have to do test update first. Anyway backup is your friend in this case.

Yup, creating an image of your current partitions would be a good idea so that if the upgrade goes awry, you can simply restore the image and keep on going.

That said, an upgrade from 5.0 to 5.4 is not all that big of a leap, so it should go okay. Maybe someone that has done it will reply, but then if they don't have the very same hardware as you, something could still go wrong. Actually, something could still go wrong even if they have the same hardware as you.

We were required by our security directives to update the Kernel to the latest version (5.4), but had various issues and had to roll back to the latest version of 5.3 due to vendor support issues. Since this is still a fairly new kernel release, many vendors have not yet certified it and will not support it. Again, as the previous poster had indicated, your hardware configuration may or may not be 100% compatible with the new kernel yet. You may be better off upgrading to a newer kernel than 5.0, instead of going with the latest and greatest. Also, you might be able to solve your networking issue by simply downloading a newer NIC driver that is compatible with the kernel that you choose to go with.
